I find that a reed that leaks only slightly will often settle in and seal really well once it has been played in.

The danger is that while it is still a bit leaky, you try and scrape it to full playability without realising the cause of the stuffines/poor response.

I test my reeds for leaks early on and wrap them with cling-film at the neck, if necessary, before continuing to scrape. I'll probably be able to remove the film within a few days.
