 Fossati Oboes

Hello to all,

I am looking to purchase a Fossati oboe. However, I am in Australia and am very limited by the oboes I am able to view and try without considerable expense. I am looking at the Fossati partly because of a colleague who has one and plays with such an amazing, unique tone, and I must admit I have also been attracted by the price.

So my questions are:

What are people's general opinions of Fossati oboes?
What is the difference between the Soliste and the Artiste?
How much difference does the 'V' model make?
What is the meaning of the different models (A01, A01N, F01)? I am guessing they relate to the keywork system?

Thanks for your advice!

I don't have any direct experience with Fossati oboes.

I've had 2 Fossati English horns and the one I currently play (profressional model) is wonderful, I got it (slightly) used for $5500 US; the other one was the 'sub-professional' model and quite acceptable for community-symphony level stuff.

Like every brand, including the coveted Loree, there will be superb instruments and ones that don't suit you. I hope you are willing to try other brands; there are some really good oboes but you have to find the one that best suits your playing, or one that 'challenges' you to play better. Have you a teacher who could give you some direction? Have you tried out your friend's instrument to see if your hands are comfortable on the keys?

If price is a consideration, do think about buying a used instrument. I'm not sure what's available in Oz but I would rather pay shipping and try several instruments out than to buy a new one that wasn't IT for me.

The ownership of Fossati changed c. 2008.
Now owned by 3 oboists.
I would suggest that if you wish to purchase a Fossati oboe , you may wish to look at instruments (re-) designed and made in 2008, 2009, 2010.
Nowadays, Fossati seems to be coming to the fore in the realm of
professional oboes. The new model oboe "MB" (named for Michel Benet)
was one of the brightest stars among the oboes exhibited at the IDRS convention this year.
Except for Fossati oboes d'amore, I tend to avoid Fossati instruments made before 2008.

With best wishes,

The AO1 is the prof model semi automatique, the AO1N is the automatique version.
The FO1 is the intermediate version.
The pré 2007 versions are the ones I personally like more.
The ones made from Gaiac wood that I owned where the most beautifil ones. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guaiacum
After 2007 they introduced the V-bore and we tested them with the first oboe of Holland Symphonia, the pricipal of the Rotterdam Symphonie orchestra, and Werner Herbers former principal of the Concertgebouw Orchestra.
They all came to the same conclusion:free blowing but with limitations in dynamics and expression.

At the IDRS convention in Austin a few years ago I played a Fosseti bass oboe. It was fabulous. I had hoped to find some of the same character in a oboe d'amore, but the ones I tried did not give me enough flexibility in timbre.
