Yes I soak the reeds for a minute or so, just the 5mm at the tip. They're already wired and I have given up trying to squeeze the opening wider having broken a couple already.
When I start playing they're at what looks to be a good sized opening, and previously they would remain at nearly that size when playing but now they start off nice and open and end up with such a narrow opening that even the slightest lip pressure closes them completely.
They only open back up when they've been allowed to dry out overnight in their reed case and even then, a couple of them have become permanently deformed so it seems. They also go from a nice, throaty crow to a feeble squeak if blown with lips around the binding.
Yes, I'm in the UK and the reeds are from Brittania. I've been using their reeds since I began playing just 4 months ago and have had no problems with them so I'm fairly sure it's a problem with me, not the reeds themselves.
