Mark -- Try keeping the half hole key entirely open until you arrive on D; then, if it is a long note, add the half-hole finger. Also, I often found that slurring in pp could be safely performed with the normal half-hole, while slurring in ff needed the half-hole to be open. Finding the intermediate dynamic in which one chooses one or the other option is a matter of experience, and become instinctual.
