Continuing on Chris P's fine explanation of the automatic octave system and possibilities- The automatic octave system is very complex, usually having 4 or 5 adjustment screws regulating the action. The slighest
mis-adjustment of even one screw can cause the entire mechanism to stop functioning. Adjustment screws constantly bite into the cork bumpers, and the slack must be taken up constantly for an automatic system to function.
I suggest that you may wish to have all 4 or 5 adjustment screws related to the automatic system replaced with Nylon tip screws, and eliminate the cork bumpers altogether.
I find that adding a second octave touchpiece on an existing automatic system very helpful.
I have also had at least one automatic system instrument completed removed from a Loree oboe and converted to semi-automatic only. One reason for this conversion was that the key height adjustments on the upper joint were extremely restricted. In order for the automatic system to work, the key (pads) were scarcely above the tone hole seats and could not be adjusted higher...
