I too am an adult beginner who has been playing for 4-1/2 years now, and I too didn't make much progress until I switched to softer reeds. My thinking was that since I was an adult, and not a child, that I ought to be playing on "Medium" reeds, but they were just too hard and I wasn't getting anywhere. As soon as I changed to "Medium Soft", I started getting ahead.
So the moral is, just because you're a grownup doesn't mean your embouchure will also be automatically grownup, too.
And for a long time (a LONG time) I measured my practice time in 3 to 5 minute increments, because that was as long as I could hold the embouchure. It is a fact that as you get older, you build muscle tissue slower, and at age 50 I was building muscle tissue a lot slower than the teenagers. Which was something else that took me a long time to realize.
