Thanks for the great exposition on tone production and its relationship to reeds.
"Try making a reed without ANY windows in the back. If you can get the sound you want before adding windows, your tip is likely thin enough. If not, then you're likely relying on windows as a crutch because of unfinished tips."
This is an excellent suggestion which I will definitely pursue. And yes - I do sometimes rely of the windows to solve tone problems! I probably start them too early in the process.
The trick with the tip is getting it just right -to ensure there is no edge to the sound. The proportions are crucial - as is the blend.
