A word of caution: the Thompson's Water Seal fix is controversial. Some claim it's a miracle cure, others claim it ruins an oboe. Even its effectiveness on decks is controversial. Given the paucity of data on this unconventional fix, it's a bit risky. If anyone is thinking about trying it, best to try it on an oboe you wouldn't mind ruining, just in case you don't like the result. It's not the sort of modification that can easily be undone.
In theory, any product that prevents the absorption of moisture into the wood may aid in crack prevention. But flooded tone holes are a separate issue. Tone holes aren't flooded by the moisture that's absorbed into the wood. They're flooded by the moisture that isn't absorbed into the wood. It forms a stream and runs down the bore, sometimes right into a tone hole. Plastic oboes don't absorb any moisture, yet they still get flooded tone holes.
Cheers,
Drew
