<<when I have motivation to practice>>
tale of caution follows
i've just had 10 days off after an intensive period practicing 2 hours daily to be in top form for my year-end concerts, in those off days afterwards i only played oboe for maybe couple of hours altogether
i'm so off my game in this short period of down-time you wouldn't believe it
-- stuff i was able to play perfectly well 10 days ago is back to snail's pace tek rep speed, and finger fumblies have multiplied exponentially
mind you, i'm in my sixties and my fingers stiffen up quickly
and ok, yes, by the end of yesterday's practice i was playing better than i started ... but i wasn't back up to my personal best by then either
don't take anything for granted -- use it or lose it
you may be younger and able to pick up unused playing skills again much faster than i can, but tip-top personal best skills do indeed blow away in the wind ... very quickly!
so my advice is
keep playing oboe *every day* just to stay in basic shape, tootle lots and lots of *easy* stuff, melodies you really love playing just for fun, easy pieces can always be polished technically a bit more, and then <<when you have motivation to practice>> you're in really good shape to practice the harder pieces, that way it's more likely you'll enjoy what you hear and can do them pretty good right away
