The best way of "cleaning" most stones is to get some loose silicon carbide grit and a piece of glass, and grind off the top layer of the stone. Put a bit of grit on the glass with water and put the stone face down on the glass, and move the stone around in a circular motion. This also restores the stone's flatness. Lee Valley Tools sells convenient little bottles of grit.
