Not only the amount of sunshine but also the amount of rain (and when it falls) and even the soil type is supposed to influence the quality of the cane.

One French reed-maker's website claims that you can class cane grown in the South of France into four distinct geograhical groups and that each produces reeds with slightly different characteristics.

Apparently you can tell visually if cane has had too much rain (unfortunately I have forgotten how). All I can remember is what struck me at the time as singularly unhelpful advice: once you have gouged the cane, if, after soaking it, you can twist it then it has had too much rain. If it breaks then it would have made a good reed.

I'm not sure that I would bother unless you already own a gouging machine.

There must be some reason why other countries import their cane from France and Spain.
