I'm a former clarinetist of many years' standing who switched to oboe.

When I first started, I did not understand how tiny and focused the air stream for the oboe needed to be. I was more-or-less "surrounding" the reed with air, rather than directing the air into the reed. I was getting a sound, but it was somewhat harsh, and I had no control over dynamics. Reeds also *all* seemed too hard.

When I learned to focus the air stream into the reed, all of a sudden all my reeds seemed too soft!

I wonder if this could be happening with your student, too?
