I heard of a story once...
A man who was feeling competent of his violin skills and was contemplating pursuing a career, attended a concert by a very famous violinist "Joe". (the tellers of this anecdote failed to mention the man's real name) He wanted to perform his solo repertoire in front of Joe to gain a reassuring word if he would be successful in a performance career.
So, the man performed all his repertoire with the same gusto (almost!) as the performance he had just seen, by Joe. Really, it was quite incredible, as the man had been working very hard at his pieces.
Upon hearing the repertoire, Joe thought for a minute or two and said. "No I don't think you have what it takes to be a musician"
Of course the man was completely crushed and that came to be the last day he ever played a violin.
Many years later, the man, who had now become a world-class physicist, attended a similar concert performed by the same "Joe". He felt compelled to go to him after the concert, and thank him endlessly for changing his life path for the better. To which, Joe said, with a quirky grin:
" I say 'no' to everyone; those who don't have the inner passion for music take what I said to heart; those who have the inner musical fire, simply ignore me."
