Susan, Thank you really much for sharing your own experience
First of all, the reason that my achievement on clarinet was not high is mainly due to, well, as what u have said, I do not really like it very much. Thus I have not practised very diligently for years. Also, before going into university, I did not intend to develop my musical skill (I started learning piano at 6 years old for leisure) as my career. However, my parents wanted me to do so, at least as a music teacher so that my skills would not be wasted.
Eventually I chose music education as my profession. Then in these 2 years I discovered that I love music soo much and I would like to devote the rest of my life into it if I could be a musician, to create music, not just a music teacher. ( And yes, after completing a degree in music, we can take another postgraduate diploma of education then we will be qualifed as school teachers ).
However, my clarinet performance is far not enough to pass audition requirement of other programmes of music. And now, choosing oboe is not not just because my teacher highly comment on my progression, I do also love the sound of oboe, so expressive and is like someone who experienced a lot, whispering tales next to your ears (forgive my poor english! ), that's why I did not choose saxophone as my minor instrument even thou almost most clarinettists would choose saxophone. I would not hesitate to choose oboe instead of clarinet as my profession, if I can do so.
Hong Kong is such a small place, there's only one institute specializing in music performance here, so the competition of candidates is very vigorous. I do not have the confidence to compete with other oboist who have been playing oboe since their primary school.. and I am so old comparing to them. That's why I am so puzzled if I should give it a try and contribute all my time in the coming 6 months for the audition.
But your sharing and comment did encourage me a lot At least there is also someone else who switched from cl to ob and successfully became an oboist. Thanks a lot Susan
But still, have you found any difficulties in switching to oboe? what are they and how did you overcome them?
