That's why I invested in the book Oboe Reed STyles. It's so non-judgmental, you can just look over a wide variety of scrapes and think about how they might (or might not) work for you.
I try to adjust reeds a teensy weensy little bit each time; sometimes it's just a matter of putting them back in the case if they don't perform. THe weather will change! If I adjust the reed, presto! When the weather changes, the dang thing (which was perfect yesterday) won't play.
I guess (being an amateur and all) I'd rather be a minimalist (once I've got a reed playing) than to waste a lot of cane 'trying things out'. Safe, timid, yeah; but not a bad player in a pinch. I had a lovely teacher, which helps. A lot.
