gekeler practical studies vs other method books

I'm starting Kenneth Gekeler's First Book of
Practical Studies for Oboe

seems like plenty of material to work with
(considering I've only started oboe 5 months ago)

anyone have thoughts on this method vs other method books

also, have started learning pieces from Forty Little Pieces
(a beginner flute/piano book) after getting bored with
First Book of Oboe Solos

Forty Little Pieces has works that are real music and
fun to play, if sometimes a little high in range.
