I have to agree with SouthPaw on this one:
The whole point of Scala di Seta is that it is quite fast, and difficult; only the best players manage to pull off accuracy AND artistry in an audition. This is what the panel is looking for.
And as for auditions: play what's on the page. In real life playing situations, it's ok to change a few articulations here and there, but for auditions, play exactly what's on the page. Changing articulations would be similar to changing words in a script audition...which obviously isn't acceptable.
As far as tempi, I have heard it at half to 120, and I have heard it at half to 160. It depends on the conductor, but usually a safe speed is 140-150.
