I don't think that it's a question of 'caring' so much as 'following the fashion'.
You only have to look at education over the past few hundred years to see how much ideas change.
When my late father was at school, the teachers cared. Really cared! They knew the correct way to teach. In fact they cared so much that they forced him to spend years learning latin and ancient greek, before one day he bucked the trend and insulted their years of 'care' by becoming an engineer! ;-)
