Always a jolly good idea to make the top of the cane fold flush or even with the tops of the shaper ears; before placing cane on shaper alternately pare sides of cane from fold down with a sharp reed knife in miniscule amounts to allow cane to just fit between the ears & to lay flat on the indentations between the ears on the flat parts of the shaper face just below the ears. Creates longer parallel sides, thus increasing pitch stability, per John Mack.
