 staple shapes, recommendations

In trying to clean up my oboe work area, I came upon an old list of Bhosys recommendations about staple shapes and tying:

"Rounder the tube darker the sound & more open the reed; more oval = brighter & more open; wider bottom the easier lower register & thinner the high; smaller opening on top = middle B & C sharper & upper B & C flatter; large top = opposite"

With respect to tying, recommends: "Mack: 25mm; Gilbert: 26mm from tubes end to inside fold."

Does this old wisdom bear out?

Elizabeth
