Thanks! I'll certainly try the hot-water approach (I soak in hot water, but it gets cold pretty fast).
The cane I am currently using needs soaking for longer than 20 minutes, though 35 may be just enough. It is over 20 years old but still in excellent condition. I "inherited" a large stock of gouged+shaped from a true friend who finally decided that reedmaking was not for her.
The cane is a selection of Mme Ghys, Loree and Delacroix, ca. 1985 or thereabouts. The gouge varies a little, even within batches, but in general is about .60 in the middle and drops to ~.45 at the sides.
The original French shape is far too wide for me, but with careful positioning on a shaper tip I can pare down the sides and get my current shape (the P. Angelo shaper tip I mentioned in a previous post). The reeds end up very soft, but sound beautiful.
