I see the beginnings of a consensus (bandwagon?), so I've just gotta jump in and play more devil's advocate!
No doubt it's true that oboes like Marigaux, Yamaha (841, not 831), Laubin, perhaps even Loree (Royale more so than regular), are "reed-friendly" for the oboist seeking a "dark" or "covered" sound. But what about the many oboists who prefer more of a "sweet" tone? For those players, the aforementioned oboes are to be avoided. The same qualities of those oboes that make them "reed-friendly" for one player make them an obstacle to another player, who may have better luck with a Rigoutat, Buffet, Covey, Yamaha 831, or perhaps a regular Loree.
Anyway, that's what I mean when I say that the "reed-friendly" oboe is a myth. It all depends on your reed style and your sound preference. We can have a meaningful discussion about which oboe is the best for achieving a "covered" tone or a "sweet" tone, but assertions that one oboe is generally more "reed-friendly" than another are ambiguous and misleading at best.
Cheers,
Drew
