My rosewood oboe has such strong grain lines that I am often trying to figure out if it is grain or a crack. My grains have slightly different color, seem ever-so-slightly shiny and are never perfectly straight. Try using a flashlight along the side to get a sense of the shine/gloss of your grain. A crack should stand out as different and should be relatively straight. If it is a deep (penetrating) crack you might be able to see it if you look down the bore of the instrument into a light source, look for the odd straight line. My only crack was over the bell tenon, fixed professionally for $40, and you would never know it had been there if I didn't tell you.
