... military C#, that's how I've known it from yesteryear when i played a thumb-plate open hole ring key oboe, but i'm vague on the specific answer, have done some online searching but haven't come up with anything conclusive

my general understanding at the moment is that the Brit military oboe circa 1800's+ was precursor of Brit thumb-plate model (open holes, ring keys) and military oboes were keyed to play second space C# on Right 1 --
can assume the same instruments came across the pond with the military musicians as oboes were essential instruments in military bands back then

... maybe our history buff oboists can shed more light on this?
