 Not being from the UK, I can't comment on the wisdom (or lack of it) regarding thumbplate vs. dual system instrument.
 
 I would, however, agree with those who say you should get an instrument with all, or most all, of the keywork you will ever want. With your instrumental background, I suspect you will progress quite rapidly on the oboe, from a technical standpoint. If you buy just a "basic" student model, I can predict that within just a few months you will be gnashing your teeth about the absence of the Bb, the left-hand F, and the common trills.
