Yamaha really does seem to have gotten a foothold in the U.S. band/orchestral instrument market. I think the things that are driving this are the perceived quality of the instruments, their consistency, and their cost (generally lower cost than other comparable-grade instruments).

I do know firsthand of orchestral oboists using Yamaha oboes at least some of the time -- and some have adopted it as their main instrument. I don't know if they would argue that it sounds better than a Loree, for example, but I do think they would say that it is less fussy to maintain and more reliable in playing.

Just my thoughts.
