I have always used the 3rd octave key after obtaining it. It makes life a hell lot easier for the top register especially during fast passages. Some people argue that the intonation is slightly unstable and response unreliable but with some work put into it they are going to be tools that follow you for the rest of your life. It's always better to have options in oboe fingerings anyways.

My setup has the top plate (half hole key) adjusted so that it is only slightly opened when not pressed. Other than that, the "diamond" shape half hole has been slightly alterred to be slightly more circular to meet my personal needs (I do not half hole, i lift for everything). Here are my fingerings:

OXX|OOO G#key

E
OXO|OOO 3rd octave

F
OXO|OOO G# key + 3rd octave key

F#
XOO|OOO G# key + 3rd octave key

G
XOO|XOO G# key + 3rd octave key

The normal conservatoire fingerings are still essential in certain passages but the ability to chose which ones will work best provides security and assurance in one's playing. Hope this helped!
