I have the Zoom H4 and like it a lot. I also considered the Edirol but can't remember why I chose the H4.
It has quite decent recording quality with the built-in mikes, and you can also connect a higher quality microphone should you desire to do so.
I put it on a camcorder stand that I already had, so that it was horizontal for recording, and followed the included directions about where the instrument(s) you're recording need to be, wrt the mikes.
I have a short oboe recording that I made with it, that I imported into Garageband and from there to iTunes, which I then saved as an mp3. If you want to hear the quality of the sound, I'll be happy to send you the mp3, but you have to recognize that I've only played six months and the tone quality reflects that.
The Zoom also does a decent job recording brass instruments, with the least good quality being the tuba. It seems to be very difficult to find an inexpensive recording device that records tuba well; I suspect that a very high end mike would solve that problem, but am not motivated to spend the $$ to get one.
