I picked up a Zoom H4 since it seemed to have the best recording from online clips. I use it mainly to record choir though. I have sample clips of my choir practice recordings online if you wanted a real-life example.
You can record 3-4 hours of audio uncompressed on a 2GB memory card, which may also be the point that batteries may run out too.
I've found that using a mini-camcorder stand and pointing the zoom horizontally at the oboe seems to sound better.
