If the aperture is more open, it will take longer for the blades to close together (as they have to travel a larger distance) which slows down the vibration of the reed making it play flat. So it will take more effort with both embouchure and breath pressure to bring it up to pitch.

An easy way to see this can be demonstrated by clapping your hands quickly (eg. 16th notes at 160bpm), holding them very close to start with and then increasing the distance they have to travel which slows down the rate at which they meet, and a lot more effort is needed to clap at the same speed when held further apart.
