It could also be that your English horn was colder. Or rather, the air column inside your English horn. I've played shows where I have to play oboe, english horn, clarinet and saxophone. In these cases I have to use my shortest EH bocal and a pretty sharp clarinet mouthpiece/barrel combination because I'm never playing one instrument long enough for it to be warmed up.
