The Oboe BBoard

Unlike A.U.K's experience, I was told not to play anything unless I really know that I can play it. I was good with that advice since I'm at the learning phase. We have a first oboe and two seconds counting me.
Maggie, the second oboe, is very helpful about teaching me the ropes, but I feel like an idiot, sitting there while everybody else plays. I guess everyone goes through the same thing when they first sit with an orchestra.
The trumpets sit right behind me. Needless to say that I can't hear a thing when they play. When I play, I often can't get a sound out of my oboe. I think it might be the difference in the room temperature between home and the band room. I'm sure that I'll learn if I can endure the awkwardness of doing nothing while the first and second oboes play.
Thanks for all of the "sound" advice on this thread. Sorry about the pun.
