I've been playing the clarinet for 2 years now and I've been using an Artley 58S clarinet (or similar model) that was made in 1985 I believe. I'm a HS player and have 2nd chair in the wind ensemble there. The was basically a hand-me-down that i got from my sister that played for a year or two. The sound quality isn't that bad when I'm using it with my Vandoren 5RV Lyre mp and vandoren optimum ligature. THe clarinet itself has been in the repair shop quite a few times for bent keys (no i didn't throw it out the window), broken corks, and loose springs. I'm also in the marching band there (The only problem i had with the clarinet during the MB season was that a cork broke and it rained during championships up in scranton, pa, but i got the pads and cork repaired). That's where my dilemma comes in because I don't like to use the same clarinet i use outdoors for indoor performances. What I'm wondering is should I buy a new, better clarinet and continue using the Artley outdoors, or to just buy a cheap plastic clarinet for the marching band season. Any input would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

Mel, in my opinion, you already have a cheap clarinet suitable (barely?) for marching band. I say that because the Artleys which sneak into our beginning program are frequently out of tune with the other clarinets and the tone quality is not very pleasant. I would recommend a new, better clarinet for concert band; it's hard to go wrong with the "big 4:" Buffet, Selmer, Leblanc, & Yamaha.

Thanks for reminding me, intonation is HORRID on my clarinet. Somehow I manage to keep it somewhat tuned, but I always thought it was just me that was the problem. Well I'm looking at getting a Buffet E-11 or E-12 if it's not that much more expensive. Anyone know of anywhere to get a cheap one? (I'm new at this); Thanks.

As for finding a cheap clarinet there are a few options. Have a look on Ebay as there are not only used clarinets being sold but several have links to music stores or go to the Resources section of Sneezy and follow the Retail link and you should find several stores there where you can find good prices on these instruments.
Good luck, I'm sure you will love either of the 2 clarinets you mentioned but keep using the mouthpiece set up you have, mouth pieces that come with Buffet clarinets are notoriously bad.
