 BG Mouthpiece Cushion
Author: Fuzzy

Back in 2014, I began using mouthpiece cushions .3mm BG brand model A14L. I replace one of them every X number of years. Six came in the original package, and I'm down to my last few. Thought it would be good to re-order.

However, all the new ones that I've ordered seem to be made out of rubber, are thicker, and don't hold up very well.

These old BGs look more like a vinyl or woven (You can see a grid-like pattern in the "fabric" when viewed at the correct angle in the correct light - though the texture is smooth like a polished surface.)

The old cushions were shiny and slick, not matte and "grippy."

All the new cushions I'm finding/buying/trying are too soft, matte, and "grippy" - even the clear ones.

I've searched BG's website, but can't seem to find a comparable product to the one offered back in 2014.

So - my question is: Does anyone here have any recommendations for a mouthpiece cushion which is more resilient, thin, and slick than the rubberish ones that seems in vogue today?

Thanks!
Fuzzy

The Silverstein omnipatches are less rubbery and are very long lasting.

Charles Bay Vibra Ease Mouthpiece Cushion, Thin/Clear (in a blue "package") fits your characteristics, including durability. Available at least on Amazon.

When prowling music shops I always look to see if they have clear patches with the 3M logo on the backing paper. That said, the best ones you can grab on the InterWeb would be the D'Addario clear patches.......clear, long lasting, not grippy.

Generally I think, the transparent ones are more long lasting but the material is also harder. I still use the BG with .08 thickness, that seems to be pretty durable to me.
If you are looking for a thinner one, you should probably try the Daddario clear patches as Paul also mentioned.

I can't speak to the quality or player experience regarding Charles Bay mouthpiece patches, but currently on Amazon the price is $15.25 for four patches, which is ridiculous. I believe they are available from other sellers for less, though they're still pricey. For *reasonably priced* patches, a better choice might be the ones from Earspasm, which cost $3.50 for six (you have a choice of two thicknesses). Earspasm doesn't carry the clear patches, however.

"Price" depends on how you look at it. The clear patches last a VERY VERY long time but the "rubber" patches need to be replaced within a few weeks or so to maintain the "dent" or scratch protection for you mouthpiece. So many more rubber patches equals MORE expensive over time. You can apply that idea to the 'quality' or the ability of one rubber patch to last a percentage longer than another.

If it's clear patches you want, D'Addario Reserve clear mouthpiece patches cost $4.99 for five. I'm sure there are no-name brand clear patches for even less. My point is that the Charles Bay patches appear to horrendously overpriced, no matter what they're made of.

I don't think the following is a new or novel idea: how about putting a high quality, ultra thin "clear" patch down first and then putting a 0.04mm or 0.08mm high quality rubber patch over it. Personally, I never liked the clear patch because I never liked my front teeth feeing the hardness of the mouthpiece beak. I always preferred to feel the rubber. It always felt much better to me.
