 Nielson or Franciax?
Author: keyChange

I have a competition in about 7 months and I can't decide whether to play the Nielson concerto or the Francaix Concerto.
It has to be one of these two per competition rules and it has to be 1-2 movements totaling about 10 minutes.
Right now I'm leaning towards movements 3/4 or the franciax.

Just make sure you spell both of the composers' names correctly -- and consistently! [rotate].

Both are great pieces.

Something to note if you decide to use the Francaix- the piano reduction is very busy, sometimes with 3 staves. Your pianist will want some extra time to put it together, and unless he/she is super-human they will be looking for "voices" to cut from the part.

For the Nielsen, you'll need a virtuoso snare drummer. For the Françaix, you'll need to be perfectly comfortable playing fancy roulades in the key of B.

I believe the new edition has an edited piano part that is more idiomatic.

Francaix 3+4 sounds like a good idea. As RMK said, the new version of the Francaix, published by Transatlantique, is not only more idiomatic for piano (but the part is still quite difficult - hopefully the competition is providing the accompanist) but it's also cheaper. There are a few mistakes in the clarinet part, though, which can be found in the March 2016 issue of The Clarinet magazine.

I suppose this is the last round of the competition and the candidates will play with an orchestra? Nielsen is a bit easier to play with orchestra.

My feeling, the Nielson is more musical but the Franciax is more showy. But that's me.

If you play the Francaix, it would not be a bad idea to play it on A clarinet. There is a transcription by Mitchell Lurie floating around out there.

I've taught students who won Univ Orchestral Competitions with both.

Francaix is more of a crowd pleaser.

Check the rules of your competition. I recently saw one with these criteria, but it required Francaix's first movement. If the choices were Nielsen or the 1st mvt of Francaix, Nielsen every time.
