I can only think of one film in which one of the main characters is a clarinetist: "La Buena Vida", a Chilean film by Andrés Wood. The young clarinetist is a bored member of a military band and aspires to become principal clarinetist of the local symphony orchestra. Unfortunately for him, the position has long been held by an old man that isn't about to give it up. Does this sound familiar and true to life?
The film-an art film- is totally original and excellent. I highly recommend it. The only other film I know about a clarinetist is the embarrassing 'Benny Goodman Story".

There is the German film known as "Beyond Silence" in English. It came out in the 90's. I remember enjoying it, but not much about it. The main character is the hearing daughter of deaf parents who has a talent for the clarinet and wants to pursue it professionally.

I think there was a Spongebob Squarepants movie. If so, Sqidward played the clarinet.

More cameo than main character, but Colin Bradbury appears in Dustin Hoffmann's 2012 film "Quartet".

One of my favorites: "Song of the Thin Man" (MGM, 1947), starring William Powell and Myrna Loy in their recurring roles as sleuths Nick and Nora Charles. The murder mystery takes place in the New York City jazz scene. When bandleader Tommy Drake (Phillip Reed) turns up dead, one of the suspects is clarinet player Buddy Hollis (Don Taylor), who may have been having an affair with Drake's girlfriend.

In Alfred Hitchcock's "The lady vanishes" (1938) the male lead is a musicologist and folk clarinetist.

In the film I have mentioned, the clarinetist even goes so far as to mention the brand of clarinet he plays: a Buffet!

Would you consider the girl in Mr. Holland's Opus a main character?

In the movie Airplane, the stewardess is playing a clarinet in the cockpit when they're "on instruments."

Somebody needs to doctor up a clip from "High Plains Drifter" and have the Stranger pause mid-shooting to pull a clarinet out of his saddlebag and play something difficult very skillfully. And then ask the onlookers, "Anybody got anything to say about THAT?... I didn't think so".
And now that I've described this- when any of you ever watch this movie, my suggested addition will immediately come to mind. And you will be compelled to describe it to whoever you're with.

The two-part film of Charles Dickens' "Little Dorrit" includes Dorrit's uncle, who plays clarinet in a theater orchestra. In some scenes he's practicing the solo from Verdi's "Force of Destiny", a theme that figures strongly in the film's soundtrack.

Is there a brazilian movie called: Solo de clarineta. Based in a poem of one the most importantes brazilians writer... Interesting point of view and a poetic movie about the clarinet sound and the fantasy behind it...

Karen McDougal plays the clarinet in one of her movies. :-)
"She attended River Valley High School[6] and became a cheerleader, band member, color guard, volleyball and softball player, as well as Michigan state champion clarinet player for 4 years in a row in high school"

Appreciative of the O.P.'s desire for the character to be a clarinetist in the film, if we broaden interpretive scope of the questions to actors who play clarinet, we have, in addition of course to the aforementioned Woodie Allen, I belive Lucy Liu, and, if she ever appeared in any of his work, Alan Alda's wife: a professionally trained clarinetist.

Was John Candy a main character in 'Home Alone'? I managed to watch some of that the other day and he's in the back of a van with a clarinet.

Not a movie, but remember Harry Kim plays clarinet on Star Trek: Voyager. He's suppose to be a badass, but always just sounds like an ok HS kid. LoL
