Hey LowClarinetMan, I played at the Teton Festival with Caroline Hartig. She's a great person and a really fine clarinet player. It must have been enjoyable to study with her. When I met her she had just finished her studies with Harold Wright and was even then a beautiful clarinet player.

BS and MS in Chemical Engineering from Purdue University. The mercenary in me passed up a scholarship in music to obtain an engineering degree. I felt I was never going to be a good enough clarinetist to play with some of the better symphonies. I took lessons from the Chicago Symphony principle clarinetist (while in high school). I can't remember his name. That was a long time ago.
I'm playing again now after a long layoff, and I know my decision to become an engineer rather than a musician was the correct one. I'm still an OK clarinetist, but not a great one.

I'm in Steve Epstein's category. Sax lessons from 4th - 12th grade; clarinet lessons in 11th and 12th grade, all taught by Joseph Sobel (?), who had played with the Army Band and National Symphony Orchestra many years before I met him.
DePauw Univ. (BA) and Columbia Univ (BS EE) (3/2 plan). I played sax in bands from the 4th grade through Columbia; clarinet for two years with the concert band at Columbia.
Washington College of Law (American Univ). JD (Night school while working full time.) This was during the 15 yr break from playing I took after Columbia. Living in Northern Virginia, I did not know community bands existed. The world was different before the internet.

I love telling my students that I am yahoo group friends with James galway... Therefore he and I are best buddies :p
Similarly the Aussie pm and I were facebook friends too! Friends in high places and all!
Clarinet teachers.... Well.. I have been so blessed to have a couple of lessons with two students of neidich one whom also studied with Lee Morgan. I learned more in those four lessons than I could possibly have imagined! And I have watched neidiches lectures online... That must count that he taught me too
I studied flute with a lady, whom some of her other students became famous... Sadly I didn't!
And to really top the cake... I have French aristocratic heritage.... Sadly I explain to my kids, there is no longer any land or titles we can claim back in France! But I guess it would be so diluted genetically by now, they might reject my claim to the throne anyway!
I once sat next to Colin Buchanan at a function. Didn't recognise him at all! So much for my chances to rub shoulders with the famous!

Thanks Sarah. So, a single lesson instantiates a teacher/student pairing. What if the two don't connect at all, with no beneficial result? Does it still earn mention in the curriculum vitae?
What about the other question, asking of teachers who have you taught? I wonder how much correspondence there would be with the claims of having been taught by them.
I realize people sometimes say they're students of famous musicians based on a single lesson or attendance at a group lesson. Liszt is an example: he did teach a lot, but I doubt the scores of pianists who claimed to be his pupil all had the same justification for saying so.

Phillip my comment was tongue in cheek.
I reckon a half year of study might count. But I do know people who will intentionallyy pay for just five lessons or so with a master so they can claim to be his student.
Or some just watch masterclasses and claim to be their student.
Like my galway example, some people like to name drop and while the hallway example is clearly a joke among my students and I, it highlights a point
I even know people who claim to be the "grandchild of moyse " because mouse taught their teacher..... Strange times!
At the end of the day, who cares who taught u, depends on if u play well. And I have been to some very well respected professionals in music and elsewhere who haven't worked at all with me. And then sometimes jo bloggs who really struggled as a student, took twenty years to master scales... Etc.. Could be the best teacher, because he took so much struggle to overcome every technique, so he knows how to break it into a million pieces!

Ok Sarah, I see what you did there - sorry for my misunderstanding.
I like your last point about the best teachers sometimes being not necessarily the best players. I've seen that in other fields. Those to whom things come naturally probably have not thought much about how they do them, and so don't readily explain them.
