Anyone try the YAMAHA YCL−SEAM Artist Model NEW BbClarinet!!! Mr. Hiroshi Yamamoto selection!!

The most refined Yamaha technology and craftsmanship have been applied
in creating a flagship clarinet that answers the needs of top artists worldwide:
the YCL-SE Artist Model. Retaining the fundamental SE Series concept of warm, richly expressive tone,
critical elements such as the bell and tone holes have been redesigned

I see one posted by a Japanese distributor on the famous auction site for $6000.00. Doesn't look like anybody in America is handling this model. This might be something to look for (or ask about) at the ClarinetFest in Kansas. The SEV does have a nice sound, compact and resonant, so if this is really an improved SEV it might be very good, and very pricey, too, especially for a Yamaha.

I also noticed there's now a Custom Ideal model (in Bb and A):

Now if they could just duplicate that special Buffet ping / ring.

If you want a clarinet that plays like a Buffet, then buy a Buffet.

There's a very short demo of the Yamaha SE Artist from Dawkes music (UK) on YouTube, along with short demos of a Backun MOBA and Buffet Divine.

Thanks, Kenb

Those demos are only a few days old. The Yamaha SE Artist seems to put out a lot of sound; I'd certainly like to hear one in an orchestra. Like the earlier SE, it's brighter than the CSGIII. I wonder what the difference is between the SE Artist and the Yamaha SEAM? All these multicolored keys and gold keys are changing the face of the clarinet. People with plenty of money to spend on new clarinets will not be lacking for new models to buy. Yamaha as a producer of boutique clarinets will certainly be a change in their image, though they have offered high end flutes for a while now.

The YCL-SE Artist, YCL-SE Artist Model, YCL-SEA and YCL-SEAM are all one and the same thing:

Another demo of the new Yamaha SE Artist clarinet.

The reviewer plays the clarinet from 3:44 to 6:13.

Yamaha makes amazing consistent clarinets that are affordable. They're thousands of dollars cheaper than the comparable offerings from other companies. The CSGII and SE artist are competing with the Tosca yet are about two thousand dollars cheaper and they're already in adjustment and ready to play out of the box.

I've never heard anyone who has been on a professional orchestra audition committee every say, "We're just looking for that Buffet ping in the sound" so lets cut that crap out.

I think John Yeh played one as a soloist. Google youtube, John Bruce Yeh. I think he said it was a new model, slightly warmer for solo work, but for orchestra playing he likes the CSVR's? Because he plays on the CSVR's. This was not. Foggy memory - I don't recall if he told me this or if it was written on this board.

Maybe this is it? I can't tell. But one of the solo performances IS this new horn. As usual Yamaha did a wonderful job.

We will know for sure this week after the NAMM convention. Yamaha always brings out their new and latest BEASTS.

I think John Bruce Yeh is playing the new SE Artist as it has the low E-F correction key, no bell ring and a longer barrel than the CSG.

The clarinet that Bruce Yeh is playing is a CSVR with the added low f correction. Yamaha will be showing a Altier customized version of of the CSVR. My CSVR A that yamaha added customization.

I played the SE Artist model, I didn't find that it played that differently than the SEVR that I purchased. The differences were mainly cosmetic, i.e. gold or hamilton plated key posts the CSG thumb low F correction and a raised C finger hole.

There is a general trend in clarinets these days. Everybody wants to spend extra money for extra "bling" I don't know what the "street price" for an SE Artist model is but a CSVR or an SEVR sell at the Ellicott City Music and Arts Center for $3080. 300 less than and R13, $800 less than a Silver plated R13. For the $3080 you get a clarinet that you can take out of the case and play a gig on, a clarinet that you don't have to take to the shop and have $450 worth of work done to it before you use it, and a clarinet that plays way better in tune than clarinets costing 2x as much. I know I've recently owned said clarinets.

Tom,

I thought I saw no bell ring on the video. Is the bell not a standard CSVR bell.

FWIW, I’ve played a set of CSGs for 11 years now (that I got new fir $5K) and they’ve never needed any work (although out of curiosity I did visit the Buena Park Attelier when they were 2 years old and they did some minor adjustments). I’ve played the CSVR, SEVR and CSG III, and while all are excellent instruments, I still like the CSGs are still my favorites. Anyone who does not consider a Yamaha is doing themselves a disservice.

PS Tom, I love your sound clips—you have a great sound on all the clarinets!

I agree Bob Bernhart. I think John was playing the SE Artist. Maybe he told me this as I was recently in touch with him. Again, he surely uses the CSVR's in the orchestra as Tom pointed out, but he played a solo performance recently using a different horn and I'm almost positive it was this new model. Like 99.9 percent sure. I recall him saying or reading that he felt it was too warm sounding for the orchestra, but great for solo work. I don't know if he said this in an email from him or where I heard it. Sorry folks...

I'll ask him the next time we write. He's so busy I don't want to bother him unless something comes up which is business related. Thanks for understanding my situation to not bother him.
