If the chip doesn't cross onto the facing where the reed seals, I don't think it would have too much effect. In the past I have repaired a mouthpiece with a chip that crossed through the facing by VERY carefully filling the chip with some hard setting epoxy (The 5 minute variety usually found in stores is too soft to sand and finish). Then carefully sand it down flush with the facing. You have to do this with a very light touch, if you sand enough to alter the facing you will be in serious trouble.
