 Small Mouthpiece Chips/Indents?

Greetings!

I just have a quick question for those of you that might know something about this or have experienced it yourself. On my mouthpiece, this sort of really tiny (And I stress small) indent/chip appeared on the tip tip rail. It only appears to be noticeable at certain angles and doesn't even really touch the front facing rail (Where the reed would touch). Does this type of "minuscule"ding effect play ability?

Only you will know.

Generally, this spells disaster for a mouthpiece.

If the chip doesn't cross onto the facing where the reed seals, I don't think it would have too much effect. In the past I have repaired a mouthpiece with a chip that crossed through the facing by VERY carefully filling the chip with some hard setting epoxy (The 5 minute variety usually found in stores is too soft to sand and finish). Then carefully sand it down flush with the facing. You have to do this with a very light touch, if you sand enough to alter the facing you will be in serious trouble.

One of my favourite mouthpieces is chipped much worse than this and plays perfectly, better than me anyway. I was going to fill them with epoxy, but they have made no difference to the way it plays so I didn't bother. If it plays OK for you then I'd stop worrying about it.

Those defects don't seem big enough to be an issue. You want to avoid bumping the mouthpiece into your front teeth, but little accidents happens and no mouthpiece goes unscathed through it's lifespan.

From what I can see in your photos, the chips/dents don't appear to get into the actual facing where the reed seals. That being the case, I don't believe they would cause any problems. This is just my opinion( I am not a professional player or repair tech). Attached is a photo of a repair (the whitish area in the corner) I did on a mouthpiece with a significant chip that went into the facing and was causing major playing problems. This repair worked well for me, but this type of repair requires the following: It must be done with a very light touch and be finished down to the level of the facing without altering the existing facing. The repair was done with light cured thin composite resin (dental filling material). I wouldn't suggest trying this unless you are willing to take the risk of completely ruining the mouthpiece. The mouthpiece in the photo was useless with the chip so it would have been no big loss if it had failed.

Send it to me. I'll check it with extreme accuracy, at no charge. I've fixed 100's of these.

I'm with most of the others, especially TAS. If you've played on the mouthpiece since before the little dings appeared, you know if its playing qualities have changed - if it has become more squeak-prone or the tone has become noisier. Bob's generous offer notwithstanding, I'd say if it plays as it always did, leave it alone and just keep playing on it.

That isn't to say that Bob or another skilled refacer couldn't improve the mouthpiece in some way. but that's a whole other issue, not related to your chips.
