 Rosenkavalier basset on alto cl?
Author: Simon Aldrich

My orchestra is doing the first waltz sequence from Rosenkavalier soon and getting a basset horn from a Canadian source is proving problematic.
Does anyone have the basset horn part from the first waltz sequence transposed for alto clarinet?
I realize it is immoral to play the basset part on alto but it is an outdoor concert, if that is any consolation :)

Thanks,
Simon

I can't see it being a problem, unless you like playing in six sharps!

Have you contacted Western University in Ontario or Mount Allison University in New Brunswick? They each have a pair of good bassets.

When ever we did that we used the publication that had the bass clarinet and basset horn part on the same part all transposed for the bass clarinet. The only time I needed to use two differrent instruments was when we did the entire opera.

Immoral? Better played on a decent alto by a good player who is used to that instrument than messing with all the problems. Be kind to your audience.
Transpose? That's for computers. You're talking a couple of hours work entering the basset part plus pushing a button to fix it. Quite possibly not strictly legal, but if the basset part is paid for, nobody has an ethical gripe.

If you can sight transpose, it's all up a whole tone exactly as you'd do when playing concert pitch parts on Bb clarinet.

Ed - thanks for this info. Do you know what that publication is (or was, if it is old).

Thanks,
Simon

Hi Ed, was this the Suite arranged by Rodzinski or the Waltz Suite?

Ed and Seok Hee,

To clarify, the piece to which I am referring is the First Waltz Sequence, not the suite. The instrumentation of the First Waltz Sequence is 2 soprano cls, Eb cl, basset horn (no bass cl.).

I was asked to play that with APO some years ago, but before the rental basset horn arrived for me to play the section principal realised there was a bass clarinet part/transcription of the basset horn part. Parts were reasigned so i played 2nd and the bass player did the basset horn. I don't know what edition that was but could find out if you were really stuck...
