 Selmer Series 10g
Author: mcbrewalot

I have a Selmer series 10 that I love and sounds great. I've had it for the last 20 years. I've been offered a series 10g for $600 as a back up horn. Unfortunately, I can't play test the 10g, but it's been promised to be in excellent condition, and it's serial # starts with D. Is this a fair price?

I'd say it's a fair price, as long as you can return it if you're not happy.

Selmers of that era were built very well, but were prone to cracking - usually through the side keys on the upper joint. If it's cracked, I wouldn't pay that much.

I wasn't overly impressed with the D series (mid to late '80s) Selmers I had.

The seller told me it doesn't have any cracks and it has been recently refreshed. I can return it, but it will be on my dime. I worry about the D serial number series. What are the good serial numbers to look for in 10g?

I currently play on a Selmer 10 with a X serial number, and I played a friends 10g in the Z range that was fantastic. I guess I don't know how much these horns changed in serial number series. Is the later horns that much worse?

Ralph Morgan said that the hand-finished 10gs were in the serial number range Z6835 through A1200.

The 10g clarinets, made for the American market, were very different from the 10S. Their sound was a lot smaller and "narrower". They never took off here in France. The ones I tried weren't all that well in tune either.

I received the clarinet and it wasn't anything close to special. It was freshly re-padded, and looked great, but the intonation was horrible, and I didn't care for the sound. I sent it back and I'm going to look for a 10 or 10s to hold me through while my main horn gets a much deserved overhaul. Thanks everyone for the info and opinions!!
