Were 65 mm barrels standard on old Buffets (c. 1930s)? Someone I respect (known to eBayers as "chetclarinet") had once written:
"The pitch is lower than some modern mouthpieces because of the larger bore which is typical of this older vintage--A440 with a 65MM barrel."

This isn't my experience. I have 3 Buffets from around this period: 1934, 1936, and 1947. 1934 has a 67.5 barrel and 1947 has a 67 barrel. The 1936 came with a 64 barrel (which looked original), and this seems to be wider bore than a modern one - but it plays very sharp, and is even slightly high switching to a 66. So my impression is that about 67 was the standard length for a long time, and that this shortened a little with the new R13 design in the 1950s.

It depends a lot on the mouthpiece and the player. I've made replacements ranging from 64 to 68mm for those instruments, and even a one-off for a full boehm Buffet of that era for -gasp-78mm (dont ask).
disclaimer.....I make and sell custom barrels

For my 1908 Buffets, Kalmen Opperman made me a 68.5 mm barrel, which plays in tune on both the Bb and the A. Kal said this was the proper length for Buffets of that vintage. He also made it with a different bore and taper from the current design, though he didn't say what the differences were.

Hmm.
1908: 68.5
1936: 67
1955: 66
So by now we should be down to 63 or so. Come on Buffet...
Maybe this trend transferred to the Yamaha CSG?

Thanks! I got a 66 mm barrel with my 1936 Buffet but a very short one with my 1938 Buffet. Just thought Chester's comment about old mpcs playing in tune with 65 mm barrels was noteworthy.
I have Buffet 714H, which the chart dates to 1894. On that clarinet, the barrel is part of the upper joint.
