Principal Clarinet of the Philadelphia Orchestra Signs with Miami Heat
Morales leaves to join All-Star lineup of James, Bosch, Wade
AP- (Philadelphia) - Oct18: The Philadelphia Orchestra today announced that Riccardo Morales, principal clarinet since 2001, has signed a free agent contract with the Miami Heat of the NBA and will join the team after the current exhibition season.
Terms of the contract were not made available to the media. Morales joins the starting dream line up that includes LeBron James, Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosch. The Heat is rumored to also be close to signing Carmello Anthony but according to his agent, the signing of Morales may influence Anthony's decision.
"It was a very hard decision to leave Philadelphia for Miami but the opportunity to play with LeBron, Dwayne and Chris was just impossible to pass up. I'm looking forward to hanging out on South Beach and enjoying the great mojitos during my clarinet practice breaks." said Morales shortly after signing his multi-year deal that includes a sponsorship agreement with Nike Reeds. "Philadelphia has been very good to me. The fans there were great. But once Allen Iverson left, things just started going downhill."
Morales' agent David Falk said that his client's contract will include a provision for playing concertos during several half times of home games. "He wants to be treated like a superstar and management agreed with the conditions we put forth."
Rumors including articles published in the New York Times this past week claimed that Morales was close to signing with the New York Philharmonic but those rumors remain unsubstantiated.
Calls to Morales' private residence and the executive directors of both the New York Philharmonic and the Philadelphia Orchestra were not returned.
