I'm feeling generous today so I am going to give you all a treat. These are all live recordings of Marcellus.
I will take these down in a few days, so get them while they are hot!

The Rach 2 was a mistake. I meant to put up the clarinet movement. I'll add it next week.
Any requests? I have pretty much anything you could ever want. Also I have dates and conductor info as well as beginning and ending announcements. I can't add everything because of the size but I can do the best parts.

Yeah that Shepherd is just amazing. You must hear the e flat solos at the end of Till! Very different! And to think Szell was conducting!

Thanks again, a great learning tool!

Thanks for putting up these recordings, Dave.
>Any requests?
When I studied with Marcellus he mentioned a live broadcast of him doing the Copland Concerto. He also said the master tape of the broadcast had been stolen by "a zealot". Perhaps someone knows the whole story.
I think people would appreciate recordings of the Debussy Rhapsodie and the Mozart wind Symphony Concertante.

I don't have the Copland but I do have the Rapsodie and the Sinfonia Concertante. Next week I'll add them. I also have Scheherazade. Don't have a live Beethoven 6.

Well, this is all just staggering. I've gotten on I don't know how many "download" groups waiting for exactly this kind of material to pop up (without much luck, by the way). So much beautiful playing! The Rhapsodie would be a delight, as would the Sinfonia and Scheherazade. I missed out on all the Marcellus/Cleveland LPs when they originally came out, and there's something really exciting about these live versions.
Again, thanks.

Thank you so much!!! Me (and i'm sure many others) strive to achieve the tone and quality of sound that Mr. Marcellus produced, and recordings are perhaps the greatest tool in making that happen! I would love to hear some Beethoven, Brahms, or perhaps some Firebird or Daphnis. I would also like to inquire about how you are in possession of these recordings? Were you one of his former students? THANKS AGAIN!!!!!

Thank you for the recordings! Really nice to hear these things.
Just out of interest, am I the only person here who is less than impressed?
I keep hearing stories of Marcellus the legend, throwing my expectation of him way up in the air, and to be honest these recordings don't match my expectations. . .
I hear quite a lot of intonation problems. Also, the sound is to me not ideal. I hear some tension in the sound that I wasn't expecting (aware that a lot of this can be lack-luster recording technique)
I am also surprised to find some of the phrasing rather unpolished. I have built up an expectation of Marcellus, if anything, having very polished, controlled phrasing, but I find some of his phrases to be quite unpleasant, with some gross swelling and unprepared direction.
Maybe it's just me, I'm not saying that he doesn't sound like a good clarinetist. He definitely does, but I was expecting to hear the messiah of clarinet (as everyone here seems to put him on a pedestal) and I did not hear that. Just a good clarinetist with a good tone, good technique (some trouble around the break) and decent phrasing.
Sorry if I'm bursting any bubbles, I just don't get the hype right now.

Also, if you're posting mp3s to show Marcellus' playing personally, some of the choices are a little funny imo.
Why put in Shosty 2nd mvt, the 1st would be much more telling
Till, I assume isn't Marcellus playing Eb
And the Rach, I assume you meant to post the 3rd mvt.
I would e very interested to hear Symphony Fantastique, and Brahms 4. And is there any chamber music other than Hirt? Clarinet quintet?
Thanks for posting though!

Any chance to post some details? soprano & pianist in the Shepherd, the various conductors (or are they all Szell?)

Thank You.
Downloaded the Schubert on the rocks with a twist.
They sure dont play the clarinet like that anymore. Sound, phrasing, articulation, color- nice to hear those elements that have become irrelevant today.
Would love to hear the Rhapsody and Sinfonia Concertante.
And if you have the Scubert Octet or Beethoven Septet, that would be wonderful. I heard Marcellus play a snippet of the Octet or Septet 9cant remember which) on some website-it was nice clarineting.

I have an aircheck from a concert in Akron on which RM plays the Mozart Concerto (not as immaculately as on his commercial recording) and Shepherd on the Rock with Benita Valente and Szell on piano. Valente was also the soprano on the famous recording with Wright and Serkin, and Dave's recording sounds exactly like her.
There is said to be a live Brahms Trio from the Casals Festival in Puerto Rico, but apparently the owners won't let it be copied.
The Dvorak Cello Concerto is full of clarinet solos. There's an aircheck from 1969 with Rostropovich available at http://rs769.rapidshare.com/files/28209947/Dvorak_Rostropovich_Szell_1969.zip, which I just downloaded. It used to be available on a CD of airchecks, but for some reason they wouldn't ship into New York.

He played the two Brahms sonatas only once. On a faculty recital at CIM. With his wife, Marion, a superb pianist. It was *not* recorded.
There are no recordings of him playing the Beethoven Septet. I don't believe that he played the work.
A tape of the Copland Concerto still exists but no one has a copy of it to my knowledge.

OK, I'll be the first one to criticize.
I must say I was a little disappointed. He is such a legend that I was expecting something more. I find the chamber music pieces for example sound a little flat (dare I say square) compared to someone like Harold Wright, especially Shepherd.
I, however, love the Schubert octet (well wind trio+orchestra). His orchestral sound, phrasing, intonation, dynamics are really something special. I wonder how well he would have sounded in the actual octet configuration.
Thanks for posting this, it is great material to listen to.

Marcellus was playing the Hungarian Rhapsody - there is simply no mistaking that.
Also, compare it to Bonade from an old Philadelphia Orchestra recording and one understands clearly whom Marcellus was inspired by and where his sound and style was coming from.
The cadenza starting on D above the staff ends with a little F Maj. arpeggio in PP that he decided to throw in based on a particular English edition of the piano version that his wife, Marion, (an excellent pianist), had a copy of.
I believe that on the Philadelphia/Stokowski rec. w/Bonade from approx. 1927, you'll hear Bonade play the same arpeggio if you listen very carefully.
So as he told me (and others) several times, the playing on that recording was a tip of the hat to Bonade with musical flourshises verified by the piano version.
He and Bonade had many coversations about that very old recording from Philadelphia.

Thanks Greg.
I just listened to the Mozart Concerto, which I think is better than the commercial recording. It reminded me irresistibly of the live performance I heard in around 1967. The MP3 data says it comes from a concert on March 13, 1973, which during his final season. Does anyone have an aircheck of the complete concerto? If so, please contact me at krsmav[at]gmail.com

Ken -
He performed the Mozart twice - in '61 with Szell (also recorded then) and in '73 with Maazel. Maybe you're thinking of some other piece or perhaps you were there in '61.
Numbers of people have the complete '73 Mozart Concerto from a WCLV air-check - perhaps you will luck out and receive a complete performance. Good Luck!

I was at Oberlin beginning in the fall of '61, so that's definitely when I heard it.
I have an aircheck (which I think I got from you) from a concert in Akron. Is that the same one that Dave put up?

Dave,
Thanks so much for sharing these marvelous and historic recordings. I was lucky to have seen the Cleveland Orchestra many times from 1962 until Robert Marcellus retired. He was truly one of the great clarinetists. You have given all of us the opportunity to hear the Cleveland Orchestra and Robert Marcellus at their best which was during live perfomances. I will be sharing these recordings with my students, friends and colleagues.

Good God....I have died and gone to Heaven.
And up here they give you email so I can write to you guys.
Here I sit, listening to the wonderful Mozart Concertante....(not just Marcellus, but fine woodwind playing from Lifshey, Bloom, Goslee, and the orchestra.....o yea also Wolfgang....almost forgot...good material). Some say this is a spurious work and not really Mozart.
Drinking a fine (but cheap) glass of Washington State chardonnay and preparing a BLT using bacon shipped from Benton's Country Hams in TN. (No I do not get paid by them).
THANK YOU for posting these performances.
This is Old School. Simplicity is no longer considered a virtue. But when you have great ingredients such as Mozart, the chef should let the music speak for itself. One does not need to adulterate the basics.
And that is what Marcellus was so good at.
Nothing but the facts.
No Hollywood.
Just straight up great playing.
And that is what I am hearing.

Hello!
I really appreciate your posting all of these wonderful recordings, every time I hear a recording of his I am always blown away by his tone and musicality! It makes me sad that I was never able to hear him play live. I was wondering if you would be able to post (or repost) him playing Pines, and if you had any recordings of him playing either Shostakovich 5 and/or 9 and the remainder of the Rachmaninoff Symphony No. 2. I would be ever so grateful!
Thanks so much!

Hello,
I just came across this post and I thought I may comment if I may. I studied with Marcellus in the 1970's. I know his playing very well and have pretty much all his recordings. I did not listen to any recording posted here but I think the quality must not have been to your liking for you to say you are not impressed. I strongly suggest you get a copy of Marcellus/Szell/Cleveland Orchestra doing the Mozart Clarinet Concerto. It is an excellent quality recording and here you will discover why Marcellus does have and deserve the reputation you are curious about. I have yet to hear a sound as rich as his, a technique as fine and an articulation as perfect. Please try again.
Best wishes. MacLeod
