 Tony Pay- double lip mouthpiece
Author: Liquorice
Date:   2010-03-31 23:45

I attended a masterclass with Tony Pay in Italy last month. Apparently Tony has never been able to play with double lip, and regrets the limitations that this caused to his tone and technique. However, since he's changed over to a Kaspar mouthpiece by Pat Yonany (apparently a copy of the exact facing that Marcellus played!!!) together with a Bay/Kaspar ligature, he's had no problem adopting this superior embouchure, and can play for minutes without any pain at all. The mouthpieces are a bit more expensive than Pat's Zinner models, but I think that the advantages far outweigh the costs. Has anybody else tried these mouthpieces?

I cannot find any information about Pat Yonany online. What country is he from?

Is this Kaspar a real vintage kaspar or a kaspar copy?

What about the mouthpiece made it possible to play Double Lip? I know a few players who cannot do it because their upper lip is too small to cover the top teeth adequately.

Marcellus had a fairly extreme overbite (from what I've been told anyway) so I'm not sure most people would come close to the same feel as Marcellus would have on the same facing. Doesn't mean the mouthpiece wouldn't play extremely well of course!

Just when you think you've tried, or at least heard of, all the mouthpiece makers.....there's at least one more!

Then why did Tony say this in the other double-lip thread?

"Well, I'm a reasonably competent clarinet player. I may not be capable of the supreme mastery of tone and technique that the double-lip exponents Tom Piercy, Tonkatoy, Norman Smale, Malcolm Martland et al can achieve; but I do OK.

However, I CANNOT play double lip.

Why? Well, it's because my upper lip is very short, relative to the size of my upper teeth. It makes playing double lip nearly impossible, and, even when I achieve it, very painful in short order.

In fact, if I had HAD to play double lip, I would never have been a clarinet player."

Are you poking fun at him or something?

Pat Yonany is an excellent mouthpiece refacer and maker- my only caveat is that he is prone to long-winded diatribes about how Robert Marcellus is the one and only shining example of how the clarinet should be played. If you are fortunate enough to gain entrance to his shop, prepare to have your ear talked off six ways to Sunday. That being said, he is a genius and I accept everything he says without question. His "PARC" facing is the best facing in the world and will work for everyone! No wonder Tony can now play double lip.

I really don't believe that double lip is superior to teeth-on-mouthpiece. If God had wanted us to play double lip, he would have stuck us with double reeds.

There can be no reason to use a symmetrical embouchure with an asymmetrical geometry.

If god had intended us to play double lip he would have made us play with the mp upside down. DL vs SL always invites interesting comments. I used to have an overbite.....when I had my own teeth......and people always commented on how I sounded just like Marcellus. Now they say I sound like Woody Allen. As you get older people say you are getting longer in the teeth. I can see that causing trouble getting your lip over them. Well, Tony is a genuine asset to the clarinet community and it's too bad he got such a bad rap on this Board. Our loss.

I would just add that Harold Wright had one of the most smooth, and mucially flexible sounds of anyone............ and he played double lip.

I was successful for a few years but succumbed to the temptation of teeth and never went back.......... schade.

Huh? He's had some disagreements here, sure, but I think he's generally aware that most of us strongly respect him and value his participation.

Yes vin- the "PARC" facing is excellent. I and many others are really excited about the new "Reverse PARC" facing which will come out next month. On this facing you place the reed with the thick part at the tip. It's suppose to make double lip playing even easier! There's so much interest in the mouthpieces that Pat is taking pre-orders. And if you order before April the 2nd then you get 100% discount!

Then there's the difference between the asymetrical version of the PARC and the standard version with balanced rails, also known as "Parallel PARCing." [rotate]

Sorry.... the Devil made me do it! :)

If you like the asymetrical version of the PARC, you obviously don't know anything about clarinet playing and should go to the doctor.

I don't think Tony ever really got a bad rap here.
Some people merely responded to him in kind.

He'll probably hear plenty about this...although it's coming here second hand!?

I don't get it. My teacher had a masterclass with Tony Pay I think sometime in the 80's after being taught double lip and Tony Pay asked him what he was doing and said he were striving too hard and just not getting the best result. Since then my teacher has never played with a double ever again and advice highly against it.

Yeah, some of you got it. Did you also get the pointless disrespect to Tony Pay! Tony Pay is an internationally known clarinetist who has contributed some interesting and useful posts to this BB. Maybe not any more thanks to Liquorice!

Some of us will miss Tony's posts...as to Liquorice's posts??

Oooops...

This was meant as an April fool's joke. It certainly wasn't meant to be disrespectful to Tony Pay. I wasn't intending to poke fun at him at all, but rather to the kinds of mindless threads that Tony finds so irritating. Things along the lines of "this is a copy of a mouthpiece played by some clarinet God, and if you buy it it will change your playing abilities miraculously". I think that Tony would be the first to see the humour in this.

But if I have in any way offended Tony, or anybody else for that matter, then I apologise.

Oh for Pete's sake lighten up! It was a joke! Tony Pay lives in the UK and has a typical British sense of humour. I don't think for one second he would be offended. On the contrary, he'll more likely be very amused by your complete over-reaction.

There was nothing offensive in Liquorice's post.

If anyone should apologise, I suggest you should, for your rude comments to Liquorice.

Steve

That's what I thought, too, especially seeing that he beat you to the punch with this joke. :)

The reference to the "PARC facing" (and in case anybody didn't get it, the "reverse PARC") was a major giveaway, but unfortunately I do think this type of humor will nearly always get misinterpreted, especially when the person in question does have a history of getting a certain amount of "parc" thrown at him around here.

Lelia,
I think that Pat Yonany has a great sense of humor and he can deal with all
the PARC here. :-)
However , some other people has a humor that makes sense only once a year -
on April fool's day...
