I have heard recently that Vandoran M30 mouthpieces are not designed for V12 reeds.. specifically size 4 because the facing on the M30 is short and the V12 reeds are longer. Has anyone tried Gonzalez reeds? If so, do they burn out quickly? What other reeds do you recommend?

They were designed with regular blue box Vandoren reeds in mind- however, if V-12s work for you, play them and don't worry about it.

I have been using my M30 as my main mouthpiece lately since my M13Lyre warped, so I continued to use Vandoren Blue Box 3.5 that I had previously been using. I really like the feel of them, even more so than V12 reeds.

Stay with Vandoren reeds. I've measured and played hundreds of these reeds and I use them myself.
If your M30 MP (mouthpiece) doesn't play well with their reeds perhaps the MP needs refacing.

I used to use 3.5 V12s with my M30, but I swtiched to Rico Reserve 3.5 and then Rico Reserve Classic 3.5+ a few months ago and I find they work very well.

The M30 has a short facing? What?? It definitely has a long facing, if not a very long facing.
I have had success with both Vandoren V12 and Traditional reeds on my M30 though.
I find my Gonzalez FOFs have the longest life-span compared to any of my other reeds.

My local woodwind specialist advised me that the M30 (which I use) is "medium-long". I used V12 size 3 or 3.5 for a time, then switched to Rico Grand Concert evolution select 3 or 3.5, as the Vandorens were too inconsistent for me. However, when I got a good Vandoren, it worked really well.
In summary - V12's work on M30 Mpc.
I can't answer your Gonzalez question, I haven't tried them.
I recommend Rico Grand Concert evolution select, based on personal experience.

I think many of the instructore here recommend the 5RV as a good Vandoren for beginners. Also something to consider would be the Redwine Mezzo, the Hite Premiere and the Fobes Debut. All of these are lower priced, and offer high cost/value ratrions for a person just starting out.
Mouthpieces are very individual, and it would be good to consult the student's teacher before buying one.

I'm not sure the M30 mouthpiece would be good for beginners, if not controlled properly, it can sound very dull and spread out. I would recommend a B40 or B40 Lyre instead.

all vandoren long facing vandoren mpc works fine whith v12 reed ex m30 m15 b40 lyre!
and yes m30 ist recomended to beginners because its a easy blow mouthpiece whith a medium open facing m30 5rv 5rv lyre and m15 are the best to beginners not b40 or b40 lyre

Thanks Jeff for your mouthpiece recommendations. I am now thinking of a Fobes "DEBUT" and Rico Royal 2 reeds. I already bought a B45 and have now discovered that yes it is very popular, but not suitable for a beginner. Not a loss though since I now have three clarinets and all need a new mouthpiece.
