I want to know if anybody knows of a good alto clarinet stand and a contra-alto clarinet stand. I don't mean one stand that works for both, I mean two separate stands. I did a search here on the forum and some members seem to be using the K & M bass clarinet stand for the contra alto but it just does not seem sturdy enough. I don't know if the Blayman stand is any good either.
For and Alto clarinet I have not been able to find anything. Do alto clarinet stands even exist?
Any suggestions would be great.

I use the K&M bass clarinet stand for the alto and basset horn. It is really quite adjustable and nestles both horns quite well. Have done performances where I'm wrestling with these and a bass.

Contra clarinets, especially the straight ones, are too tall and heavy for any reasonable stand.
A double bass stand might work, but it would need to be modified to hold the bottom securely, to hold the instrument up fairly straight and to strap the upper end securely.
The Quodlibet Sax-On stand, which holds the entire weight of the instrument, might also work. See the thread at http://test.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/read.html?f=1&i=277604&t=269885.
I believe there's a tuba stand called the Weight Lifter, but I couldn't find it through Google, among all the actual weight lifting sites.
I bring a blanket and put it over the instrument case to lay it horizontal. If you can borrow the percussionists' table, that always has a rug on top to let you lay down cymbals and tambourines quietly.

I use the K&M stand for my Vito plastic contra.
Just bend the U shaped receiver on the top of the stand a bit wider to fit the horn.
It IS strong enough.

The K&M will work fine for an alto clarinet, though I guess something a bit smaller/lighter would be better. It will also work fine for a contra alto. In the bass clarinet convention both Selmer and Leblanc had their contrabass clarinets on K&M stands without any problems.

I've used the K&M stand for both my Leblanc paperclip contras (contra-alto and contrabass) in concert, and have also used it for standard bass clarinet at home. It is plenty strong enough and quite stable in real-world use.
It would also work fine for alto since the height is adjustable. It folds into a reasonably compact size for travel. I recommend them highly.

I use a K&M stand for bass clarinet and basset horn, as well as contrabassoon.
They work best on altos and basses (to low Eb) that have a floor peg fitted.

I remember Ed Palanker posted in one thread a while back about a custom bass clarinet stand he had. If i remember correctly it was some sort of percussion stand that he had modified. Haven't seen him on the BBoard lately but maybe you can give him an email to get an idea of what he had done so you know what to look for. i know your talking about altos and contra altos, but you get the idea.

I'm sure we've had this discussion before.....
I use both the K&M bass clarinet/bassoon stand (mostly for gigs), and an old Blayman stand (mostly at home). They both work well for alto, bass, and contra-alto clarinets, with the K&M being lighter and more portable and the heavy Blayman being somewhat more secure.

I think they are just as sturdy if not more when putting the bell directly on the stand, without the peg (which is how I usually use the instruments).

I bought an Alto Clarinet stand from a someone on eBay who constructed his stand from a square base of particle board, bevelled around the top, a foam rubber plumbing gasket, large enough to nestle the bell of an Alto or Basset Horn regardless of whether it has a floor peg, and a cradle for the neck that uses a Y-shaped, rubberized guitar neck yolk screwed into a piece of plastic piping which was theaded and mounted into the base. It's a clever design and I hope the maker had success with selling it. I just wish I could recall the name of the seller, I would certainly pass along contact info if the maker had an eBay store or something.

Yup. For contra-alto clarinet, I've been happy with the K&M stand sold for bass clarinet and bassoon. For alto, I needed a separate stand because I sometimes practice both instruments in one session, so I modified an old alto sax stand I picked up at a yard sale. I added a toilet plunger cup to support the bell and narrowed the upper bracket (by bending each arm inward) that supports the upper part of the instrument, so that the clarinet won't flop sideways.
(This stand for holding the instrument while I'm not playing it is different from the support stand I rigged for *playing* alto clarinet, although both make use of the business end of a toilet plunger. I'm finding that I usually prefer the Selmer 2-hook strap for playing, although the stand came in handy this spring when I injured my right wrist.)
