There is a really interesting video on Youtube; brief interviews and some sound bits of Julian and Sabine playing a neglected concerto.
Sabine speaks! and they play together very well...I think the CD comes out next month.
Don't miss this great little video of our two clarinet royals.

EMI appears to be the releasing company. I thought that they were leaving the recording industry (sad day) or least the classical end of it.
Agree....two superb artistists.
The music chosen.... How can you not smile when hearing those pieces

Thanks for the video, it was awesome, amazing playing.
As for Sabine, there really is no paradigm that fails to satisfy any kind of clarinetist. She has it all, and so does Julian.
Notice what clarinet he's playing on?

At least Sabine Meyer is way far better now than 20 years ago. But still not among my most favourite players. I've also heard from student of one of the horn player in Ensemble Sabine Meyer that his other students and also some more students find Sabine Meyer to be least good of all the players in her ensemble and frankly I have to agree with them. Also just face it her brother for example is much better player.

I still prefer my old Selmers, and wouldn't part with them.
Though if I was offered a set of Wurlitzer reform Borhms...

I heard from a friend whose teacher once studied with the brother of a teacher of a student of her uncle that you're a bit clueless if you believe me.

The video/audio dispells another myth.....Notice how the 2 systems, Oehler and Boehm, are totally compatible.
And unless that horn player is named Don Imus or Alvin Dark or Jimmy the Greek, I would bet he is misquoted.

Ohhh, I was so happy to see this video of 2 great players. The Spohr is really tough to play well. I agree that they blend very well together.

Beautiful playing.
I was very interested to see Oehler and Boehm system instruments played side by side like that. I think this discredits the case many German orchestras have against having Boehm system players in their ranks.

crnichols couple of years ago when the Goncertgebouw orchestra had clarinet auditon you had to play Würlitzer reform bohem or you could get 6 months to change. Almost all the players who got to round two were playing french bohem clarinets.

Iceland clarinet- 18 months ago the Concertgebouw Orchestra held an audition for Principal Clarinet. The audition was open to all systems. All of the players who got through to the 2nd round played Reform Boehm clarinet.
What is your point exactly?

Iceland Clarinet is a clueless clarientist. That is quite the obvious! Sabine Meyere maybe a a little musically square, but have no doubt, she plays the way we all aspire to sound.
Who is playing principal in Concertgebouw nowaways?

I love the clip, but I'm not sure that this proves that French and German clarinets have no problems side by side. Sabine and Julian are soloists and have been playing together in lessons/rehearsals for awhile. Blending in an orchestra is different than playing solo. I'm not saying it can't be done by great players, but it does make life more difficult.

I watched the clip and they both play great!
>> she plays the way we all aspire to sound.
Not really (I think she's a great clarinetist, but that has nothing to do with it).

Chris I never said that Sabine isn't good I only said that other players and most obviously here brother Wolfgang are better. And I never want to sound so smooth and liveless. I want edgy and rough sound.

I thought about this recently because of a friend being absolutely delighted by Michele Zukovsky's musicianship, and I guess those great players in the LAPO have proven it can be done. It probably is harder, but I guess with the experience of blending with completely different instruments daily in an orchestral wind section, blending with another clarinet (while it might not be perfect) is probably not too bad.
Now aside from my dorky paragraph about clarinets, this video is fantastic! Can you imagine if we saw this stuff on TV as regularly as we saw news about Jay-Z and Rihanna(etc.) working together? I'm glad "Old Geezer" and the Bboard is here to bring my attention to this sort of thing. WOW. The video made me practise before I did anything else.
I think I've finally realised that Julian Bliss is grown up now, even though I knew it. The last I saw of him was probably the cover of his French Music CD...

Thanks for bringing this to our attention. I enjoyed it very much!
I had a clarinet prof. who bobbed like that and I found him very distracting to watch, but a delight to hear. However, with Sabine and Julian I am so amazed at their artistic abilities that I hardly notice the bobbing.

Not one ounce of distinction between the two. Individuality: one can only play so fast. After that it is just a clarinet. Then again, if one has the distinction of a Reginal Kell...... But we have been there already.

Thanks for pointing us to this!
I think we can all agree that Sabine and Julian are stupendously good, whether they have our ideal sound or not.

It FINALLY loaded (I left it going overnight). Worth it. It lifts my spirits and just continues to make me wonder just how far I could go if I put a little more dedication and practice time in on the instrument.
