Okay, we've had the "material battle" again. Now, I made two recordings of the same piece (I hope you'll agree with me so far).
- What material is each clarinet made of?
- Bonus question: what material are the keys plated with?
- Bonus question 2: what mpc? what reed?
(I beg you not to comment on the various glitches and timing issues - I'm well aware of them. Just listen to the ring)
[ the quiz has ended - links and files removed --Ben ]
(poll ends this evening - I don't have unlimited bandwidth)

It's a (blue) sweater and jeans. But I award you that point.

I don'tknow what the material etc is, but I thought that sample one had a more pleasing sound, and was played better. Sample 2 was to bright for my taste.

Um gosh....it's really hard to tell, but my guess is #1 is metal and #2 is resonite.....Or it could be the same clarinet in both samples but with different mouthpieces/reeds.....Or maybe you are standing on your head in one and not the other...I dunno......I give up

Same clarinet, #1 played on the Swiss side of the Bahnhof in Basel; #2 played on the German side at a bus stop.
Is it evening there yet?

#1 Is played on a plastic clarinet
#2 Is played on a wood clarinet
If I passed the quiz, I want a note to my mother explaining this makes up for failing Bowling (don't ask).

If there are so many people on this board unwilling or unable to have a civil and balanced discussion about important issues, then I shan't bother to post here any more.
To the great relief of many of you, no doubt.

tictactux,
Material aside, and assuming ceteris paribus (wrt reed and mouthpiece), the first clarinet is of a better quality or in better condition that the second. Or maybe you were trying harder when you played #1 :-)
Both clarinets were made from synthetic material (i.e., not wood) with nickel plated keys.
Keep #1, sell #2.

The tone was essentially the same. However, the recordings differed.
Oh, and both sounded like clarinets.

Weird.....I got solo, then duet, then trio all overlaid and stepped....how did that happen.........anyway, through the sound distortion on my computer, I'd say think they're the same set up....
1, playing into the mike, 2, away form it.
and I think your cat memorised it really well for the third playing.
and the prize is................................?
Well done Ben.......... lightened my night!

Very interesting. We need more stuff like this on the board.
I would only say that sample two sounded more even in timbre. The chalameau seems better able to project in the second sample.
Good rythm.

Okay, I declare the quiz ended and here is the solution:
#1 is a metal Rauber/Montreux (my "Swiss Army Clarinet") with a Mitchell Lurie Premium #2 mouthpiece and a ML #3.5 (regular) reed and a Rovner Dark ligature. The keys are not silver, I guess they're either chromed or nickel. The pads are home-made EVA "foam rubber" pads. I was wearing a blue sweater with a grease spot and blue jeans.
#2 is - the very same setup, including reed and all. Sorry to fool you.
The only difference between #1 and #2 is that in #1 my laptop (whose built-in mic I used) sat on the sofa while I was playing standing and in #2 I was sitting and the laptop was on the table.
My observation:
- We see and hear a lot of things that we want to see and hear. Expectations might skew our observations. Many were assuming two different setups, and many heard them.
- Recording setup is crucial. No wonder a lot of time is spent in studios for post-recording treatment.
- Metal doesn't necessarily sound different than wood or hard rubber. It can be confused with other materials, and I'd expect the same with hard rubber or plastic.
- I don't like playing while sitting. I prefer standing if possible.
Thank you all for participating. It was fun, wasn't it?

No fair.
You didn't tell us that the blue sweater had a grease spot.
Everyone knows how grease will randomly reflect the sound....GBK

Glad to be the nearest........I just didn't get the oxfam fashion. .. and yes I agree...many variables that skew the perception. So we can't really trust anything that we hear??
